February Event: Alco Appliance Museum

On Sunday, February 25 at 11 AM, club members(and brothers) John and Jeff Lefever and their business cohort Jason Dumont will host us at their appliance warehouse, repair shop and museum in Beltsville, MD.

applianceadAlco Appliance was founded in 1979 by John and Jeff Lefever, who both have a special knack and appreciation for vintage appliances. On display in the museum section of the shop are well over 100 post-war major kitchen and laundry appliances, many of which are connected and can be demonstrated. We will be using vintage ovens and ranges to prepare hot lunch snacks, and vintage dishwashers to clean the china, glasses, and flatware. John even suggests bringing some of your laundry to be washed and dried in ‘50s – ‘70s style using one of over a dozen operating laundry devices, if you want a true demo!

washersThere is ample off-street parking in the lot next to the building, as well as on-street parking on wide Bacon Dr. If the weather cooperates and the roads are not salted, the location will definitely accommodate bringing a special-interest or collector car.

pegleg

After you’ve enjoyed your time mingling, eating and ogling the peglegstorechromed and colorful equipment (inside and outside Alco Appliance), we encourage you to take the short drive down Route 1 to Pegleg Vintage, at 9600 Baltimore Ave.in north College park, which is open from noon-7PM.

This is a great midcentury modern antique shop full of furniture, housewares, and home accents at reasonable prices. Owners Krisi and Chad are always welcoming and social, and some of our members are already well acquainted with them. In fact, club member Dan Ryan's husband, Russ Little, even has some of his quilted artwork there on display (ahem, and for sale).

This outing is a perfect indoor event for a winter’s day, combining the warmth of cooking appliances with the warmth of our members’ personalities.

Of course, if Mother Naturechooses to threaten us with stormy/icy/snowy weather, we may have to forego the experience and cancel the event, as there is no snow date (but we would reschedule a future visit). If it is at all iffy out there, keep an eye out for email alerts from us, or call the club hotline at 240-270-CARS (2277) to find out of the event is canceled.

RSVP: Please RSVP to StraightEightsPresident@gmail.com by 6PM Friday, Feb 23 with the full names of those people attending.

Cost: Free for 2018 club members; $10 for non-members.

Once you are on Bacon Dr, Alco Appliance is the first building just a bit down the street on the right (UNIT F of a multi-tenant warehouse-style building). Look for our small Straight Eights signs directing you to the parking lots (a small one at the front door, and a larger one right after you pass the building). If you have any issues, call us at the club hotline: 240-270-2277
