Scenic Drive to North Beach, MD: The Beach within Reach!

Since this event was rained out last year, we are redoubling our effort this year, including a rain date.
The Straight Eights will embark on a southern Maryland scenic driving caravan from Upper Marlboro to historic North Beach, Maryland on Saturday, July 27 (rain date, Sunday July 28). We will meet up at the Home Depot parking lot (between the Home Depot and Wendy’s) on Route 301/Crain Highway just north of the intersection with Route 4. For those mapping the location, the address of the Home Depot is 15410 Chrysler Drive, Upper Marlboro,MD.20772.

North Beach and neighboring Chesapeake Beach are located in the northern tip of Calvert County, about 30 miles from Washington. The communities developed in the very early 1900s as beach resorts, aided by the opening of rail service to Chesapeake Beach in 1900.

While North Beach housed primarily vacation cottages and locals in the fishing industry, Chesapeake Beach developed with a hotel, casinos, racetrack, dance pavilion, and a roller coaster. However, business declined during the 1930s depression, and further declined followed the opening of the Bay Bridge in 1955 (which opened the Maryland eastern shore and Delmarva beaches to vacationers driving from the metro areas). Legalized gambling in southern Maryland continued to draw some visitors until it was outlawed in the mid-1960s. Limited gambling has again been permitted at the Chesapeake Beach Resort & Spa since the early 2000s.

Our drive from our meeting point in Upper Marlboro to North Beach is about 25 pretty miles on a combination of road types and should take about 45 minutes. North Beach has public parking lots and street parking, but keep in mind that this is a summer weekend, so there will be many other people enjoying the nice waterfront town. We will informally explore the town and restaurants on our own. The direct route from North Beach back to the starting point at the intersections of MD 4 and MD 301 is about 15 miles and 25 minutes from the beach.
When:Saturday, July 27 at 11AM.
Where:Meet at the Home Depot parking lot between the Home Depot and the Wendy’s. Our group will depart no later than 11:15AM.
RSVP:Provide names and email address of participants and whether or not you could make the rain date if we have to postpone. Send your RSVP to StraightEightsPresident@gmail.com by Thursday, July 25, so that we know whom to expect (and who to notify in case of a postponement or cancelation).

Rain Date:  In the event of a rain postponement, we will notify all members who RSVP’d via email provided in the RSVP by 8AM on the day of the event. Our rain date is the next day, Sunday, July 28. In the unlikely event that the rain date is also awash with water falling from the sky, we will send out a cancelation by 8AM that day as well, and throw up our hands and shriek obscenities into the murk.  And then we will have a morning cocktail.
